The learning inside the play
A block tower, a pretend café or a muddy outdoor mission may look simple, but each is full of learning. Tamariki are testing ideas, using language, negotiating with friends and discovering that mistakes are part of the process.
Our kaiako support this learning by observing closely, asking thoughtful questions and offering help without taking over. That balance gives children the security to stretch themselves at their own pace.
Making space for confidence at home
You do not need special equipment to encourage confident play. Everyday moments are often the most valuable.
- Offer open-ended materials such as boxes, fabric, blocks or natural treasures.
- Allow uninterrupted time so children can follow an idea through.
- Pause before solving a problem for them and ask, “What could we try?”
- Notice effort and persistence, not only the finished result.
When children hear that their ideas matter, they become more willing to speak up, keep trying and take on new challenges.
