Settling in: a gentle first week

Before the first day

Short visits help your child become familiar with the rooms, outdoor spaces and kaiako before the full routine begins. Talk about the centre in simple, positive language and let us know about comfort items, sleep patterns, favourite activities and anything that helps your child feel secure.

A clear, loving goodbye

Goodbyes work best when they are warm, brief and consistent. A simple ritual—a cuddle, a phrase you use each day, and a confident handover to a kaiako—gives your child a pattern they can learn to trust. Slipping away can make future separations harder because the goodbye feels unpredictable.

What settling can look like

Some children join in quickly; others observe from a safe spot or need extra closeness with a familiar kaiako. Tears at separation can be a normal part of the transition and do not mean the day will stay difficult. We follow your child’s cues and keep whānau updated as they find their rhythm.

How whānau can help

  • Use the same short goodbye routine each day.
  • Tell us about changes at home that may affect your child.
  • Keep the first evenings gentle and allow extra connection time.
  • Ask for an update whenever you need reassurance.

Settling is a relationship, not a race. With patience and consistency, your child builds trust in their kaiako, the routine and their own ability to manage a new experience.
